Twenty-five years ago, Justice Robert R. Rose, Jr. of the Wyoming Supreme Court, Gerry Spence, and John Ackerman had a vision.  John Ackerman, who started practicing as a public defender in Casper Wyoming, had later organized the National College of Criminal Defense in Texas.  He invited Justice Rose down to participate and teach at the National College.  Justice Rose was so impressed with the National College that when he returned to Wyoming he enlisted the aid of his former law partner and friend, Gerry Spence, and together the three invited renowned criminal defense trial attorneys from around the county to the University of Wyoming law school to participate in the Western Trial Advocacy Institute.

Justice Rose

Justice Rose, first a trial lawyer and then a beloved Wyoming Supreme Court Justice.  As he got older, he lost the sight in one eye.  Here in this wonderfully personal photo by his great friend Gerry Spence; he is the "People's Pirate.

Gerry Spence

Gerry Spence, the nationally renowned trial attorney, who refers to himself as just a small town country lawyer is charismatic, flamboyant, but most important of all, effective.  He is the author of numerous books, including most recently the book he is shamelessly hawking here.

John Ackerman

John Ackerman not only started the National College of Criminal Defense and, along with Justice Rose and Gerry Spence formed Western Trial Advocacy Institute.  Most recently, he has been defending individuals accused of war crimes having alleged the murder of hundreds of people.

Robert Rose III

The tradition established over a quarter of a century ago of great nationally renown criminal defense trial attorneys coming together in Laramie, Wyoming to share with others their ideas, skills and knowledge continues with Justice Rose's son,  Robert R. Rose, III continuing the legacy started by his dad.
